Every once in a while I take something from the ki Every once in a while I take something from the kiln and am more than a bit happy... here’s an example, a piece where I employed a slightly different approach that, for me, worked well.

It got me thinking...there’s always a bit of a battle going on in me between the semi abstract and the realist... I love and long to be better at a much looser, impressionistic style. But actually, whether I like it or not, I seem to be better at depicting the more detailed and realistic. And truth be told I do really enjoy the challenge of making a wave look as real as I can. The immense satisfaction of getting it right (in my eyes!) is absolutely a driving force for me. Each painting begins with standing on a beach just wave watching, followed by many photographs and maybe some sketches. So by the time I take it out of the kiln if it doesn’t bring back a distinct memory then I’m frustrated...

So I think if a wave looks real or if it’s gives an impression of a real one, then I’ve avoided that fine line between nostalgia and sentimentality...

I feel that even after a lot of years practicing I’m still learning everyday about how to achieve that. Anyway, this wave will be staying with me for a bit as I can’t quite bring myself to sell it...for a little while anyway.
Truly fantastic sunset this evening... of which th Truly fantastic sunset this evening... of which this isn’t a photo! But I’m sure it looked fab on the river 😁
I love the calm and collected feel these pieces em I love the calm and collected feel these pieces emanate... despite the intense control and concentration, the precision and planning and years of practice involved in their creation, once they left the makers studio and found their way here to us they seem to just ‘rest’...
