“Water is a constant source of inspiration for my work, I aim to choose subject matter which challenges me as an artist. I always use my own photography and sketches as a starting point for my paintings, ‘designing’ the picture from a number of different images to make studio based pieces which allow me more opportunities to experiment. I build up many layers of watercolour paint, starting with washes and finishing with a dry brush or natural sponge to create more random marks or I work in mixed media combining pencil drawing with
My fascination with the sea began with early parental encouragement to produce art and to enjoy risk taking, often accompanying my father on sailing trips. He was a keen art buyer, I grew up surrounded by many seascape paintings.
Over the last ten years, living close to the coast in East Sussex and enjoying coastal holidays has informed my work. I have found it exhilarating to visit my local beaches during a storm, observing how the waves behave. Each storm throws up different colours and wave shapes.”
