“As someone who has lived in landlocked counties most of my life I have always yearned to be by the sea. In 2018 circumstances and a lot of luck took me to live by the sea in Fife for two years. During that time daily drawing and painting trips to the beach developed my understanding of the shifting mesmerising light effects and forever changing colour of the water and the surrounding sky and land.
The margins, the edges are where the interest lies for me as well as the subtlety of colour I observe when immersed in the landscape. Painting outside rather than in the studio really helps me connect with a place.
Whilst in Scotland my sketches gained added energy and expressive mark making in response to being surrounded by sea and sky. Working quickly and expressively at the coast has injected further energy and vitality into the paintings I make when back in the studio. The experience of living and working by the sea has benefitted all of my practice in unexpected ways..”
